The Four Dhams – Complete Information
Each of the four dhams has its own significance, challenges, and unique experiences. Here is everything you need to know about each shrine:
Yamunotri
Goddess Yamuna
The source of the Yamuna River and the westernmost shrine in the Char Dham circuit. The trek from Janki Chatti is 6 km and can be done on foot, by pony (₹800-1,200), or by palanquin (₹3,000-4,000). The temple is surrounded by natural thermal springs and beautiful mountain views.
Tip: Take a dip in the Surya Kund hot spring before darshan. The hot water cooks rice which is taken as prasad.
Gangotri
Goddess Ganga
The origin of the holy Ganga River and the second stop in the Char Dham circuit. The temple is directly accessible by road, located on the banks of the Bhagirathi River amidst stunning mountain views. The actual source (Gaumukh) is 18 km trek from here.
Tip: Visit the Bhagirath Shila where King Bhagirath worshipped Lord Shiva to bring Ganga to earth.
Kedarnath
Lord Shiva
One of the twelve Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva and the most challenging dham to reach. The 16 km trek from Gaurikund tests your faith and endurance. Helicopter services are available from Phata, Guptkashi, and Sersi (₹7,500-10,000 round trip). The temple is surrounded by snow-capped peaks.
Tip: Start trek at 4-5 AM to reach by noon. Carry energy snacks and water. The views are worth every step.
Badrinath
Lord Vishnu
The most important of the four dhams, dedicated to Lord Vishnu. The temple is located on the banks of the Alaknanda River between Nar and Narayan mountain ranges. Directly accessible by road, Badrinath is the easternmost shrine in the circuit.
Tip: Visit Tapt Kund (hot spring) before darshan. Also visit Mana Village, the last Indian village before Tibet.

10-Day Char Dham Yatra Itinerary – Day by Day
This is our recommended itinerary for the complete Char Dham Yatra. It follows the traditional clockwise circuit and allows adequate time for darshan, travel, and rest:
Day 1: Dehradun → Barkot
Drive to Barkot (base for Yamunotri). Evening at leisure for acclimatization. Overnight at Barkot.
Day 2: Barkot → Yamunotri → Barkot
Early morning drive to Janki Chatti (45 km), trek/pony/palki to Yamunotri (6 km), darshan, return to Barkot. Overnight at Barkot.
Day 3: Barkot → Uttarkashi
Drive to Uttarkashi (base for Gangotri). Evening visit to Kashi Vishwanath Temple. Overnight at Uttarkashi.
Day 4: Uttarkashi → Gangotri → Uttarkashi
Drive to Gangotri (100 km), darshan at Gangotri Temple, visit Bhagirath Shila, return to Uttarkashi. Overnight at Uttarkashi.
Day 5: Uttarkashi → Guptkashi
Long scenic drive to Guptkashi (base for Kedarnath). Rest and acclimatization for next day trek. Overnight at Guptkashi.
Day 6: Guptkashi → Kedarnath → Guptkashi
Early morning drive to Gaurikund (30 km), trek/pony/helicopter to Kedarnath (16 km), darshan, return to Guptkashi. Overnight at Guptkashi.
Day 7: Guptkashi → Badrinath
Drive to Badrinath via Chopta (mini Switzerland) and Joshimath. Evening darshan at Badrinath Temple. Overnight at Badrinath.
Day 8: Badrinath → Rudraprayag
Morning darshan at Badrinath, visit Tapt Kund and Mana Village (last Indian village), drive to Rudraprayag. Overnight at Rudraprayag.
Day 9: Rudraprayag → Rishikesh
Drive to Rishikesh. Evening attend the magical Ganga Aarti at Triveni Ghat. Overnight at Rishikesh.
Day 10: Rishikesh → Dehradun
Morning sightseeing in Rishikesh (Laxman Jhula, Ram Jhula), drive to Dehradun, drop at airport/railway station. Yatra completes.

Common Mistakes Pilgrims Make (And How to Avoid Them)
After 12 years of facilitating Char Dham Yatra, we have seen pilgrims make the same mistakes again and again. Learn from others to make your Yatra smooth and spiritually fulfilling:
Mistake #1: Not registering online before the Yatra
Why it is a problem: Registration is mandatory for all pilgrims. Without it, you may be stopped at checkpoints and denied entry to temples. Many pilgrims are unaware and face issues at the last moment.
Our solution:
Register online at registrationandtouristcare.uk.gov.in at least 2 weeks before your journey. Carry printed registration and valid ID proof.
Mistake #2: Trying to complete Char Dham in less than 10 days
Why it is a problem: Char Dham Yatra covers 900 km of mountain roads and includes treks. Rushing means no time for proper darshan, acclimatization, or rest. You will be exhausted and may face altitude sickness.
Our solution:
Plan for minimum 10 days. Keep 2 buffer days for weather delays. A rushed Yatra is not a fulfilling Yatra.
Mistake #3: Not booking accommodation in advance during peak season
Why it is a problem: May-June is peak season. Hotels and guest houses fill up weeks in advance. Last-minute bookings cost 2-3x more or may not be available at all, forcing you to stay in substandard places.

Mistake #4: Ignoring the correct route order
Why it is a problem: The traditional order (Yamunotri → Gangotri → Kedarnath → Badrinath) has religious significance and follows the natural geography. Changing the order means backtracking and wasting time.

Mistake #5: Not carrying enough warm clothes
Why it is a problem: Even in May-June, temperatures at high-altitude dhams (Kedarnath, Badrinath) drop to 0-5°C. Many pilgrims pack for plains weather and suffer from cold, ruining their spiritual experience.

Pack layered clothing: thermals, sweaters, heavy jacket, woolen cap, gloves. Better to remove layers than be cold.
Mistake #6: Underestimating the Kedarnath trek
Why it is a problem: The 16 km trek from Gaurikund to Kedarnath at 11,755 feet is challenging. Many unprepared pilgrims struggle, need emergency evacuation, or cannot complete the Yatra.

Assess fitness honestly. Book helicopter (₹7,500-10,000) or pony (₹2,500-4,000) if unsure. Start trek training 2 weeks before Yatra.

- 3Carry sufficient cash—ATMs are rare after Uttarkashi and none near the dhams. Petrol pumps are available at major towns but keep tank half-full always.
