Why is Char Dham Registration Mandatory in 2026?
The Uttarakhand Government has made biometric registration mandatory for all pilgrims visiting Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath, and Badrinath. This system (known as the Yatra E-Pass or Tourist Care system) is designed to manage crowd control, ensure pilgrim safety during extreme weather, and keep track of vehicle movements in the fragile Himalayan ecosystem. You cannot cross the checkpoints at Rishikesh or Sonprayag without a valid registration QR code.

Alternatively, you can download the "Tourist Care Uttarakhand" mobile app from the Google Play Store or Apple App Store. You can also register via WhatsApp by sending "Yatra" to the official government number (+91 8394833833).
Step-by-Step Online Registration Process
Step 1: Open the official portal and click on "Register/Login". Step 2: Fill in your name, mobile number, and select "Pilgrim/Tourist". Step 3: Verify the OTP sent to your mobile. Step 4: Create a "New Tour" and select your travel dates and the specific Dhams you plan to visit. Step 5: Add the details of all members traveling with you, including their Aadhar Card/Passport numbers and emergency contact details. Step 6: Download the PDF containing your unique QR Code.
Physical Verification and the Yatra Wristband
Once you reach Uttarakhand, your QR code will be scanned at major transit points like Haridwar, Rishikesh, Barkot, and Guptkashi. Upon your first physical verification, you will be issued a waterproof wristband (Yatra Card). This wristband is scanned at the entrance of every temple, ensuring a smooth and queue-managed entry.
Crucial Transport Advice: Do Not Self-Drive
Having your registration is only step one. The biggest mistake pilgrims make is attempting to self-drive the 1,000+ kilometer circuit. The roads to Yamunotri and Kedarnath feature narrow cliff edges, blind hairpin bends, and unpredictable weather. Commercial vehicles driven by flatland drivers often break down or cause accidents. It is highly advised to book a local, hill-certified taxi with an experienced driver who knows the terrain intimately.
